O solstício de verão acontece por volta de 21 de junho e marca o dia mais longo do ano no hemisfério norte.

Neste dia, o Sol atinge o ponto mais alto do céu ali pelo meio-dia. É esta trajetória vertical do sol que explica a abundância de luz nesta altura do ano.

Em Portugal, por exemplo, o sol nasce antes das 6h da manhã e põe-se depois das 9h da noite. Mas não é nada comparado com o norte da Noruega onde o sol brilha durante as 24 horas! É o chamado “sol da meia-noite.”

Este solstício também marca o início do verão e em muitas culturas há festas ligadas ao sol e à natureza. Em Portugal, por exemplo, celebram-se os Santos Populares, entre eles o Santo António, o São João e o São Pedro.

A festa do São João é uma das mais populares, especialmente no Porto e em Braga. Na noite do dia 23 para o 24 de junho, as pessoas saem à rua, dançam, comem sardinhas assadas e dão marteladas nas cabeças umas das outras com martelinhos de plástico. É um pouco difícil de descrever, tens que experimentar.

The summer solstice takes place around June 21 and marks the longest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.

On this day, the sun reaches its highest point in the sky around midday. It is this vertical trajectory of the sun that explains the abundance of light at this time of year.

In Portugal, for example, the sun rises before 6am and sets after 9pm. But that’s nothing compared to northern Norway where the sun shines for 24 hours – it’s called the “midnight sun”!

This solstice also marks the beginning of summer and in many cultures there are festivals linked to the sun and nature. In Portugal, for example, the Popular Saints are celebrated, including St. Anthony, St. John and St. Peter.

The São João (St. John) festival is one of the most popular, especially in Porto and Braga. On the night of June 23rd to 24th, people take to the streets, dance, eat grilled sardines and hammer each other over the head with little plastic hammers. It’s a bit hard to describe, you have to try it yourself.
