Durante muito tempo, as pessoas pensavam que era apenas o lado esquerdo do cérebro o responsável pela nossa fala.

É verdade que o hemisfério esquerdo é muito importante: ajuda-nos a formar frases, escolher as palavras certas e compreender a gramática.

Mas hoje os cientistas sabem muito bem que o lado direito do cérebro também participa. Nomeadamente, o hemisfério direito dá à linguagem cor e emoção.

Ajuda-nos a perceber quando alguém está a ser irónico ou a contar uma piada. Também nos ajuda a entender o sentido mais profundo de uma frase, quando as palavras não dizem tudo de forma direta.

Por exemplo, quando alguém diz “Que lindo dia!” com um tom irónico, é o lado direito do cérebro que nos permite perceber que, na verdade, está mau tempo e a pessoa está só a ser irónica.

Resumindo, os dois lados do cérebro trabalham juntos quando falamos e ouvimos. O lado esquerdo constrói a estrutura das frases; o lado direito dá-lhes nuance e significado extra. Sem esta cooperação, a nossa comunicação seria muito mais pobre e redutora.

For a long time, people thought that only the left side of the brain was responsible for our speech.

It is true that the left hemisphere is very important: it helps us form sentences, choose the right words, and understand grammar.

But today scientists know very well that the right side of the brain also plays a role. Specifically, the right hemisphere gives language color and emotion.

It helps us understand when someone is being ironic or telling a joke. It also helps us understand the deeper meaning of a sentence when the words don’t say everything directly.

For example, when someone says “What a beautiful day!” in an ironic tone, it is the right side of the brain that allows us to understand that the weather is actually bad and the person is just being ironic.

In short, both sides of the brain work together when we speak and listen. The left side builds the structure of sentences; the right side gives them nuance and extra meaning. Without this cooperation, our communication would be much poorer and more reductive.
