Luísa: Sabes, António… nunca gostei daquela expressão de esfolar gatos. É tão cruel! Pobres bichinhos.

António: Esfolar gatos?! Que expressão é essa?

Luísa: Então?! Nunca ouviste dizer que há muitas maneiras de esfolar um gato?

António: Ah, sim. Mas isso é só uma metáfora. Ninguém está a fazer mal ao gato na realidade.

Luísa: Bem sei, mas há outras formas menos brutais de dizer a mesma coisa. Por exemplo, “Todos os caminhos vão dar a Roma”. É mais suave, não achas?

António: Acho. Mas a do gato tem mais impacto. Fica na memória!

Luísa: Claro que fica, porque é horrível! Já imaginaste uma criança a ouvir isso pela primeira vez?

António: Pois, talvez fique traumatizada… ou talvez não. Olha, eu não fiquei. Aprendi apenas que há várias formas de resolver um problema.

Luísa: Eu prefiro com Roma. É mais civilizado e mais poético.

António: Tu és mesmo sensível. Mas olha que um bom ditado, às vezes, tem de arranhar um bocadinho para ser eficaz.

Luísa: Desde que não arranhe gatos, tudo bem.

Luísa: You know, António… I never liked that expression about skinning cats. It’s so cruel! Poor little animals.

António: Skinning cats?! What kind of expression is that?

Luísa: What?! Haven’t you ever heard that there are many ways to skin a cat?

António: Oh, yes. But that’s just a metaphor. No one is actually hurting the cat.

Luísa: I know, but there are other less brutal ways of saying the same thing. For example, “All roads lead to Rome.” It’s softer, don’t you think?

António: I do. But the cat one has more impact. It sticks in your memory!

Luísa: Of course it does, because it’s horrible! Can you imagine a child hearing that for the first time?

António: Yeah, maybe they’d be traumatized… or maybe not. Look, I wasn’t. I just learned that there are several ways to solve a problem.

Luísa: I prefer Rome. It’s more civilized and more poetic.

António: You’re really sensitive. But remember that a good saying sometimes has to scratch a little to be effective.

Luísa: As long as it doesn’t scratch cats, that’s fine.
