Quando eu nasci aqui em Paredes, em 1970, Portugal era outro.

Havia polícia política, censura e uma guerra colonial que sugava vidas e dinheiro.

Não existiam eleições livres. O 25 Abril de 74 foi o dia de todas as mudanças onde emergimos da noite e do silêncio, como escreveu Sophia de Mello Breyner.

Aprovada a Constituição de 76, todos os cidadãos são iguais perante a lei e participam na governação do país, a começar pelos representantes que elegem.

Liberdade, igualdade, escolha e participação, quatro princípios fundamentais que nos vão guiar a partir de agora num olhar sobre estes 50 anos de democracia, seja pela lente de quem a estuda ou pela vivência de cada um dos cidadãos.

Das conquistas aos desafios. Como vemos hoje e o que esperamos amanhã da nossa democracia.

When I was born here in Paredes in 1970, Portugal was different.

There were political police, censorship and a colonial war that drained lives and money.

There were no free elections. April 25, ’74 was the day of all changes where we emerged from the night and the silence, as Sophia de Mello Breyner wrote.

Once the Constitution of ’76 was approved, all citizens were equal before the law and participated in the governance of the country, starting with the representatives they elected.

Freedom, equality, choice and participation, four fundamental principles that will guide us from now on as we look back on these 50 years of democracy, whether through the lens of those who study it or through the experience of each individual citizen.

From achievements to challenges. How we see our democracy today and what we expect from it tomorrow.
