Tiago: Olá João. Que estirpe nova é esta da gripe que promete atacar este inverno?

João: Olha, trata-se da estirpe K do subtipo H3N2, é uma estirpe completamente nova e que já circula em vários países do mundo desde o último Verão e entretanto já se espalhou até por todos os continentes.

Tiago: Em Portugal ainda não há registo da presença desta estirpe?

João: Ainda não, mas isto é uma questão de tempo. Aliás, a ministra da Saúde alertou no início desta semana que esta estirpe, que não estava contemplada nas vacinas que temos atualmente, vai colocar maior pressão sobre o SNS¹ neste inverno.

Tiago: Precisamente. Falando ainda desta nova estirpe, porque é que pode ser mais agressiva ou causar sintomas mais fortes?

João: Sim, pode revelar-se mais agressiva, sobretudo para os clássicos grupos de risco, ou seja, para as pessoas com mais de 65 anos e para os doentes crónicos, sobretudo para estes dois grupos. E há uma razão que o explica: sendo uma estirpe nova, o nosso sistema imunitário ainda não teve contacto com ela e, portanto, se formos contagiados por esta estirpe, as consequências podem ser mais gravosas.

Tiago: Hi João. What is this new strain of flu that is expected to strike this winter?

João: Well, it’s the K strain of the H3N2 subtype. It’s a completely new strain that has been circulating in several countries around the world since last summer and has now spread to every continent.

Tiago: Has this strain been detected in Portugal yet?

João: Not yet, but it’s only a matter of time. In fact, the Minister of Health warned earlier this week that this strain, which is not covered by the vaccines we currently have, will put greater pressure on the National Health Service this winter.

Tiago: Precisely. Speaking of this new strain, why might it be more aggressive or cause stronger symptoms?

João: Yes, it may prove to be more aggressive, especially for the classic risk groups, i.e., people over 65 and the chronically ill, especially these two groups. And there is a reason for this: as it is a new strain, our immune system has not yet had contact with it and, therefore, if we are infected by this strain, the consequences may be more serious.
