A extrema direita está no poder em Itália, na Finlândia e na Hungria. Suportam um governo na Suécia e está a caminho de ser poder novamente na Áustria.

Em França as mais recentes sondagens dão quase maioria absoluta ao partido de Le Pen nas legislativas.

Nas próximas eleições europeias, a direita radical deverá ganhar em nove países e ser segunda ou terceira força noutros nove, incluindo na Alemanha, onde já nem a memória histórica da barbárie nazi parece conter o crescimento da xenofobia e a perseguição das minorias.

As explicações tradicionais, como a económica, realça os efeitos de quem se sente na margem perdedora da globalização, ou as culturais, que se centram no protesto de quem aspira o regresso a um mundo mais simples e menos progressista, parecem não conseguir explicar a velocidade galopante deste crescimento da direita radical.

In the next European elections, the radical right is expected to win in nine countries and be second or third in nine others, including Germany, where not even the historical memory of Nazi barbarism seems to contain the growth of xenophobia and the persecution of minorities.

Traditional explanations, such as the economic one, which highlights the effects of those who feel on the losing side of globalization, or the cultural ones, which focus on the protest of those who aspire to return to a simpler and less progressive world, seem unable to explain the galloping speed of this growth of the radical right.
