E foi há 50 anos, no dia 16 de março de 1974, que a primeira tentative para derrubar o regime de Marcelo Caetano e por fim à ditadura falhou redondamente.

Esse fracasso ficou conhecido para a história como o golpe das Caldas e aconteceu assim, na madrugada de 16 de março de 1974, um mês e meio antes do 25 de Abril, portanto, o regime de infantaria número cinco, estacionado nas Caldas da Rainha, saiu em direcção a Lisboa com o objetivo de derrubar o regime.

Mas quando chegou às portas da cidade, percebeu que as outras colunas que se deviam ter juntado, ou vinham desde Mafra ou de Vendas Novas, afinal não tinham saído dos quartéis.

And it was 50 years ago, on March 16, 1974, that the first attempt to overthrow Marcelo Caetano’s regime and putting an end to the dictatorship failed miserably.

This failure became known to history as the Caldas coup and it happened like this: in the early hours of March 16, 1974, a month and a half before April 25, the number five infantry regiment, stationed in Caldas da Rainha, set off in the direction of Lisbon intending to overthrow the regime.

But when it reached the city gates, it realized that the other columns that should have joined it, either from Mafra or Vendas Novas, hadn’t left the barracks after all.
